System poznawczy człowieka funkcjonuje niezwykle sprawnie. Trudno jednak zakładać, że wszystkie informacje muszą zostać głęboko przetworzone, aby wpływać na nasze zachowanie. Jednym z mechanizmów, dzięki którym jesteśmy w stanie redukować koszty przebiegu procesów poznawczych jest automatyzacja. Przyjęcie istnienia odrębnej klasy procesów automatycznych pozwoliło na wyjaśnienie wielu zjawisk, których nie dało się wytłumaczyć przyjmując, że świadoma uwaga zapośrednicza przetwarzanie wszystkich informacji, które docierają do systemu poznawczego człowieka. Dzięki procesom automatycznym jesteśmy w stanie wykonywać niektóre czynności szybko, bezwysiłkowo, bezrefleksyjnie i bez udziału świadomej kontroli.
Ciekawą metaforą opisującą mechanizm działania procesów automatycznych jest metafora automatycznego pilota. Procesy automatyczne opisywane są dziś przede wszystkim przez poznawcze teorie automatyzacji w odniesieniu do problemu nabywania wprawy. Ich przebieg jest jednak analizowany również w kontekście automatycznego przetwarzania emocji, automatyzmów w zachowaniach społecznych, czy też psychopatologii (Pashler, 1998). Szeroki i zróżnicowany obszar zastosowań problematyki przetwarzania automatycznego nie niesie niestety ze sobą zgody co do cech definicyjnych tych procesów. Można wymienić co najmniej kilka klas procesów, które określane są w literaturze jako automatyczne.
